Elections are the heart of our democratic process. This process involves several state agencies including the Office of the Secretary of State. Elections in Maryland are administered by the State Board of Elections, an independent State agency. The Office of the Secretary of State plays an important role in the election process and includes:

• Certifying candidates for nomination by a principal political party on the Presidential Primary Ballot
• Serving on the Board of State Canvassers
• Accepting Accepting Petitions for Referendum, which are petitions to refer to the voters an act of the General Assembly.
